With a few warm days this week in PA (and more on the way!) we were so happy to spend some refreshing our spirits in some fresh air! Spending more time outdoors as a family is both a fun and beneficial activity. Wherever you live, in a rural or urban area, there are several things you can do to make the most of your outdoor time.
Here are some ideas to get your family started:
- Take a walk: Exploring the outdoors is a great way to spend time together as a family. Whether it’s a walk around the block or a hike on a nearby trail, getting out and enjoying nature together is sure to be an enjoyable experience. With new sights and sounds, our toddler is captivated. I am also not tempted to use technology so I am really able to engage in the moment.
- Have a picnic: Pack a picnic lunch or dinner and head to your local park or outdoor area to enjoy it. This is a great way to get out and spend time together in the great outdoors.
- Garden together: Planting a garden is a great way to get the whole family involved in a project. Even if you don’t have a lot of outdoor space, you can still plant a small garden in pots.
- Take your toys outside: If you don't have (or don't want) a bunch of outside toys, take what you have outside. Just grab a few small and hearty toys on your way out. Our favorites are Green Toys and our Small Fries Games. Playing with toys on the front or back porch is a great way to limit distractions and change up your scenery.
- Make it part of your routine: The day can easily get away from you and before you know it, its bedtime. If you want to spend more time outdoors, pick a time of the day and make it part of your routine. For us, after dinner works best. But you may find first thing in the morning is just perfect for your family. Having a dedicated outside time will make it easy for you to remember and incorporate into your day.
And a bonus tip: Look for community events! Search social and local signage for community events. Most events will be outside and there is always so much to do. If you are local to Mountain Kids Hollidaysburg, mark your calendars for Blossoms in the Burg on May 13th.
Spending more time outside is a great way to spend quality time connecting and recharging. Go ahead and make it part of your routine, and you’ll be sure to create lasting memories together.
